Foreword / Ŋgɔdonya

Dey English-Eʋe Learner's Dictionary

This work is an attempt at translating the English Language into Eʋe for the use of learners of the language.  It is to be noted that the Aŋlɔ dialect has been used here for the simple reason that the authors are native Aŋlɔ speakers.  Luckily, however, this dialect is the one used in all Eʋe literature in Ghana, Togo and Benin, and is accepted as the standard Eʋe.

Where there are no Eʋe words for a particular English word, the English word has been adopted into the Aŋlɔ dialect much as the English did earlier on with Latin and Greek words they could not translate into English.

We wish to register our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Gertrude Missodey for her immense assistance in word processing and typesetting the manuscript.  Our thanks go also to Mr. B.K. Takyi whose work in the English, Akan, Eʋe, Ga Dictionary was consulted once in a while.
